JOB DESCRIPTION

Technical Coordinator/ Junior Superintendent

 

WORK BASE:              East Cowes office (with occasional ship visits)

WORK HOURS:           37.5 hours per week (plus out-of-hours support as needed)

WORK PATTERN:       Monday to Friday 8am-4pm, occasional out-of-hours

HOLIDAY:                   20 days per annum (plus bank holidays)

OVERALL PURPOSE OF ROLE

As a small shipping company operating small, friendly ships carrying various cargo around the UK, Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, our commitment to the safety and maintenance of our ships is a crucial element in our success.

Our small office team, the ship’s crew, and our shore-based technical team work closely together to make sure our ships have everything they need to keep moving. This is an important role coordinating the technical team and ensuring that our ships are kept supplied, stored, and maintained in accordance with our Quality System (SMS). Also, part of this role will develop to assist with vessel surveys and safety audits (training will be provided).

This can sometimes be a pressured role in a fast-paced environment and would suit someone who gets job satisfaction from problem-solving, with the end result contributing to our ships being continuously safe and operational.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES

 

·       Superintendency duties will include supporting the Technical Department, training will be given

·       Source and purchase ship stores for Company vessels, always striving for good value

·       Monitor vessels activities/locations/requirements through effective communication

·       Arrange timely delivery of parts to the correct location by liaising with the vessel, port agent and supplier

·       Maintain the parts Ordering System in accordance with the ISM, ensuring it is kept up to date

·       Communicate regularly with the ships relating to spares and stores ordering, and keep them updated with progress with parts requests

·       Monitor defect reports and ensure correct parts ordered and delivered to the vessel in the required timeframe, and close the loop once defect rectified

·       Vessel surveys and safety audits

·       Develop relationships with chandlers, port agents, technicians, and local contacts as well as with local, national, and international suppliers

·       Communicate regularly within the office and shore-based team to ensure relevant information is shared, and the right people have up-to-date information

·       Be prepared in case of urgent requisitions and maintain an up-to-date list of go-to suppliers

 

 

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

 

·       Strong technical/engineering background preferably marine-related

·       Ideally hold/have held a marine qualification (e.g. COC EOOW, etc) but not essential

·       Excellent logistical skills

·       Pro-active and pre-emptive, always thinking ahead when planning maintenance/purchasing

·       Good organization and record-keeping

·       Problem-solving skills and perseverance to think around issues to get to a solution

·       Flexible, adaptable, can-do attitude

·       Good, clear communicator

·       Good IT skills

·       Be budget-conscious without compromising the quality/suitability/availability of parts/technicians sourced

·       Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment

·       Out of hours work is to be expected to respond to urgent technical/ISM-related needs

·       Understand the importance of regulatory compliance and company ISM (SMS)

·       Be a team player and pull together to support our ships
