Housing Vulnerability Officer – Sandown

£32,000 per annum | 37 hours per week | Fixed-term for 3 years

Community Action Isle of Wight is looking for an approachable, compassionate and motivated Housing Vulnerability Officer to join an exciting three-year project funded by The National Lottery Community Fund.

Working within the Sandown community, you will support people experiencing housing insecurity, unsuitable or unstable accommodation, or who may be at risk of homelessness.

This is an early-intervention role, identifying housing difficulties, helping residents access practical support, understand their options and connect with the services that can help them.

About the role

You will provide practical, short-term one-to-one support to residents facing a range of housing challenges.

This could include people at risk of losing their home, living in insecure or unsuitable accommodation, residents of HMOs (Houses in Multiple Occupation), people living in or moving on from supported accommodation, and individuals whose financial or personal circumstances are putting their housing at risk.

The role will include:

• Supporting residents who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, helping them seek assistance as early as possible.
• Helping people understand their housing options and connect with appropriate housing, homelessness and specialist services.
• Engaging with residents living in HMOs, supported accommodation and other vulnerable housing situations.
• Providing practical information, guidance, signposting and warm referrals.
• Working closely with housing providers, voluntary and community organisations and statutory services to improve outcomes for residents.
• Building residents’ confidence and ability to engage successfully with services and find sustainable solutions.

You will also contribute to community drop-ins and outreach, making support accessible to people who may not ordinarily approach formal services.

About you

We are looking for someone with excellent communication and listening skills who can build trust with people experiencing difficult, uncertain or complex circumstances.

You will have experience of providing practical support or guidance and be confident working with a range of organisations to achieve positive outcomes.

Knowledge or experience of housing, homelessness prevention, HMOs, supported accommodation, welfare, financial wellbeing or community support would be particularly valuable.

You will be organised, resilient and non-judgemental, with a commitment to helping people find practical solutions and preventing housing difficulties from becoming homelessness.
