Live – in Carer position

About me -

Hello, my name is Josh. I am a 37 year old writer and podcaster living in East Cowes. For the past 14 years I’ve been living on my own supported by three full time PAs who provide me with wraparound support with all aspects of my life. I consider myself as a very sociable person with a wide social circle, making me very tenacious about the life I wish to lead. I have both a degree in script writing and a master’s degree in writing for the media and now as a freelance writer I continue to work as both a podcaster and journalist with a regular column in the Isle of Wight County Press. I have Cerebral Palsy which means messages from my brain become jumbled resulting in spasms and unwanted movements. Therefore I’m physically vulnerable and cannot weight-bare independently and so always require someone to aid with every physical transfer I make. I live on my own with a team of three carers. Sharing my life with carers means it’s great if we’re into similar things and have similar views. I love most types of entertainment, watch a lot of sport, particularly football and are often travelling all over watching shows and concerts. With TV and entertainment in general being part of my job, it’s important I can find someone who can appreciate that. In and around my home I use a manual wheelchair that enables me to move around by myself, outside of the house I require assistance and need to be pushed. My speech can often be difficult to understand to those who do not know me but is easy to pick up in no time at all.

About the role –

The role is for a live-in carer with all bed and board included.

When you imagine the term 'carer' it can conjure up many ideas of what it’s like to work in healthcare and the inevitable personal care that is required but what makes this job unique is the vast range of other activities which you may be involved in.

You will be a member of a three-man working team aiding me through all areas of independent life ranging from housework, to script writing, to socialising with friends and exercising. As my personal and professional life have evolved, the role of my carer has slightly changed and I now require assistance with audio editing, recording podcasts and drafting documents. All of these aspects can be taught by my existing staff but require a level of willingness and self motivation to learn new skills. We would never expect anyone to do anything outside of their skill set but offer upskilling in relevant areas of my work to ensure that you are the best possible assistance to me at all times.

As I live alone, all the duties that you must do in your own life are like the duties you can expect to have to do in this job. I do not have a cleaner, a cook or any other employees that may be used by care homes or care agencies. This means that you will be expected to clean, cook, and do general household chores. However, this is not the be all and end all and my care and the things that I want to do always comes first and take priority over household duties. As a homeowner I take pride in the cleanliness of my home and as I can’t physically do this myself, my carer always needs to remain mindful of outstanding domestic duties which may need doing.

About you -

This is not a typical care environment and I like to think that my carers and any potential carers share the same beliefs as I do in regard to the job being more about enabling me to live the life I wish to lead, as opposed to living a life that is bound by limitations.

To be successful in this role you will need –

  • To be physically fit
  • A full, clean driving licence
  • A laid-back personality
  • A good understanding of a work/life balance

No experience necessary, full training is given in house, with access to apprenticeship schemes and nationally accredited qualifications.

We are lucky to have built a successful and reliable bank of relief staff which hopefully will continue to grow as the years go by to support with holidays and absence. Life can be extremely unpredictable at times and unexpected absence will occur. However, repetitive unplanned absence will result in disciplinary action.

Hours –

Each shift consists of 24 hours and for budgeting purposes, is split into 15 hours of day shift and 9 hours for sleep although in reality these are changeable like anyone else's life. I sleep pretty well and rarely need assistance during the night but need someone just in case! You will be paid for both parts of the 24-hour shift and full living quarters and food/drink are provided.

Wages –

Wages start at £285 per 24hr shift and rise incrementally.
