Seasonal Vacancy – Port Operative (Marina)
Location: Shepards Marina, Cowes
Hours: 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Start Date: 01 April 2025

Are you looking for a hands-on role in a dynamic marine environment? We’re seeking a proactive and customer-focused team member to join our Marina team at Shepards Marina.

About the Role

As a Port Operative, you’ll play a key role in the smooth day-to-day running of the marina, assisting with berthing and dry sailing operations. This customer-facing position requires a positive ‘can-do’ attitude, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and a commitment to delivering excellent service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a CHC ambassador, engaging with harbour and marina users to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Promote and uphold a safety-first culture, ensuring the highest standards of health & safety for all users and colleagues.
  • Support CHC’s financial objectives by taking a commercially aware approach to daily operations.
  • Carry out maintenance tasks as directed by the Team Leader, ensuring the marina is always presented to a high standard.
  • Assist in emergency situations as required.
  • Support other Cowes Harbour Commission teams when necessary.

About You

We’re looking for an enthusiastic, motivated team player who thrives in an active, outdoor environment. You’ll be confident working within health & safety guidelines, able to multitask effectively, and have relevant transferable experience – ideally in a marine setting. Boat handling experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience:

  • GCSE Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above)
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2
  • RYA First Aid (or equivalent)
  • Experience working in a marina or similar environment
  • Customer service experience
  • Competency in Microsoft Office applications

Additional Information

This is a seasonal, full-time role based at Shepards Marina in Cowes. Given the nature of marina operations, some weekend, evening, and Bank Holiday work may be required

Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) is the Statutory Harbour Authority for Cowes, the Isle of Wight’s principal port. As a vital maritime hub, Cowes hosts a diverse range of commercial shipping, vehicle and passenger ferries, and high-speed ferry operations. Renowned for its role in world-class yacht racing and leisure sailing, the harbour welcomes a vast number of resident and visiting pleasure boats each year.

Cowes Harbour operates as a Trust Port, meaning we have no shareholders and are managed solely for the benefit of our users. We receive no local or national government funding; instead, we are entirely self-financed through harbour dues and commercial ventures, including Kingston Boatyard, Shepards Marina, River Medina moorings, our fuel barge, and commercial contract work undertaken by our afloat team.

*Note: The current rate of £12.44 will increase to £13.21 from 01 April 2025.
