Port Operative – Marina Berthing Master (26 hours per week, shifts over 7 days to include most weekends)

Are you looking for a new challenge in a dynamic marine environment? We are seeking a motivated and customer-focused individual to join our Marina Berthing team at Shepards Marina in Cowes.

The Role

As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in assisting with day-to-day marina berthing and dry sailing operations. This customer-facing role requires someone with a proactive, ‘can-do’ attitude, working both independently and as part of a close-knit team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a CHC ambassador, engaging with harbour and marina users to deliver outstanding customer service.
  • Promote and maintain a strong safety-first culture, ensuring the highest Health & Safety standards for both visitors and colleagues.
  • Support CHC’s financial objectives by adopting a commercially aware approach to marina operations.
  • Assist with marina event berthing plans, busy weekends and rally plant.
  • Assist with site maintenance as directed by the Team Leader, ensuring a clean and welcoming environment for visitors.
  • Respond to and assist in emergency situations as required.
  • Collaborate with other Cowes Harbour Commission teams when necessary.

About You

We are looking for an enthusiastic, reliable team player with a commitment to maintaining a safe working environment. The ideal candidate will have strong multitasking abilities, a willingness to learn, and relevant experience in a marine or similar setting. Boat handling experience is essential.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience:

  • GCSE Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above)
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2
  • RYA First Aid qualification (or equivalent)
  • Previous experience in a marine or similar environment
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Competency in Microsoft Office applications

General Information

This is a part-time, seasonal role based at Shepards Marina in Cowes. Flexibility will be required during peak times, including weekends, evenings, and Bank Holidays with adequate prior notice.

About Us

Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) is the Statutory Harbour Authority for Cowes on the Isle of Wight, a major port handling commercial shipping, passenger ferries, and high-speed vessel movements. As a renowned centre for yacht racing and leisure sailing, Cowes welcomes a diverse range of resident and visiting vessels each year.

CHC is a Trust Port, operating independently without shareholders or government funding. Our revenues are generated through harbour dues and commercial activities, including Kingston Boatyard, Shepards Marina, river moorings, our fuel barge, and contract work by our afloat team.

*Note: The current rate of £12.44 will increase to £13.21 for 01 April 2025.

Cowes Harbour Commission
