The Field Service Engineer is a technical professional reporting to the Production Manager and Customer Support Team Leader, responsible for providing onsite technical support to customers.
This role includes the installation and commissioning of new equipment, troubleshooting and resolving issues with installed systems, and supporting warranty-related matters. Combining strong technical expertise with effective communication skills, the Field Service Engineer works directly with customers onsite to deliver practical solutions.
The role requires frequent travel and the ability to work independently while on site. The successful candidate will be expected to travel approximately two weeks out of every four, with the remaining time spent supporting onsite operations, including production activities and calibration work.
As a key representative of the company, the Field Service Engineer is expected to deliver a high-quality, seamless customer experience through clear communication with customer representatives and a strong understanding of the supported products and their underlying engineering principles.
Key Responsibilities
- Install and commission equipment at customer sites under defined procedures and standards
- Perform functional checks, setup, and calibration of systems
- Support customer handover and basic operator training
- Diagnose and resolve common mechanical, electrical, or system issues using established troubleshooting methods
- Provide onsite and remote technical assistance to customers
- Escalate complex or non-routine issues to senior engineers or production teams with clear technical information
- Carry out routine servicing, inspections, and preventive maintenance
- Support warranty assessments and repairs in accordance with company processes
- Identify repeat issues and report trends to internal teams
- Act as the onsite technical representative of the company
- Communicate work progress, findings, and outcomes clearly to customer personnel
- Maintain a professional, safety-focused presence at customer sites
- Complete service reports, commissioning records, and job documentation accurately
- Record faults, corrective actions, and parts usage
- Provide structured feedback to engineering and production teams
- Plan and manage onsite work activities independently once deployed
- Travel regularly to customer sites (approximately 50% of working time) and work safely without direct supervision
- Adhere to company procedures while working autonomously in the field
- Support onsite production operations and calibration activities when not deployed to customer sites
Skills & Experience Required
- Proven experience in a field service, service engineering, or similar technical role
- Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding capability
- Proficiency in strain gauging, including installation and verification of strain gauge systems
- Competent in soldering to a high standard for electrical and instrumentation applications
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and engineering documentation
- Good understanding of calibration principles and measurement systems
- Strong problem-solving skills with a structured troubleshooting approach
- Clear and professional communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively while travelling
Essential Requirements
- Full, clean UK driving licence
- No unspent criminal convictions (role may be subject to background checks)
When an emergent situation requires it, the Field Service Engineer may be asked to be flexible in their work allocation and carry out tasks not listed in this document. These tasks will always be ones that the individual has the capability to complete.
