Contract Type: Permanent

Hours: 28.5 per week

We are looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Archivist to work with our small team to reduce our cataloguing backlog and facilitate more of our collections moving online. These newly accessible records will then need to be promoted to people of all ages and backgrounds.

You will undertake a wide range of Collection Management tasks including accessioning and cataloguing material donated by individuals, businesses, and the local authority using Microsoft Excel. With the County Archivist you will also critically evaluate legacy catalogue entries which are no longer fit for purpose and help support a team of cataloguing volunteers in reformatting existing catalogues. You will then work to upload all data to online catalogues and work with the County Archivist to assess and evaluate new ways to improve our online offering.

You will also assist in Collections Care, including repacking collections as necessary, assisting the Archivist in gathering the environmental data in our stores and work with colleagues across the council to ensure appropriate storage conditions for our collections.

You will participate in activities across the Isle of Wight Council Heritage Service, designed to raise the profile of our collections, as well as supporting the Research and Searchroom Assistants in their roles to provide on-site and remote access to our collections as required.

This is an opportunity to work in a Local Government Archive during a period of accelerating change and help us take advantage of every opportunity to widen the understanding of the past and future culture of the Isle of Wight.

For further information or an informal discussion, please contact Simon Dear at 01983 823820 or by email at [email protected]
