Job Title: Mechanical Engineering Apprentice
Reporting to: Production Manager / Machine Shop Chargehand
Job Summary: To train as a mechanical engineering apprentice, to undertake and complete a structured training program of academic modules and practical machine shop work in order to gain the required skills and knowledge to support the engineering department.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Observing, learning and understanding a wide range of engineering skills and processes while under the instruction of skilled engineering staff
- To be able to demonstrate these skills and processes as the training period progresses by working independently or with a team, to undertake tasks as instructed and increasing overall contribution to the department
- To undertake and successfully complete suitable college modules throughout the training period, achieving the academic grades and practical skills in order to entitle yearly progression leading to completion of the mechanical engineering apprenticeship
- Learning and understanding the importance of Health and Safety within the workspace
- To develop the skills to programme, set and machine components to drawing specifications on a variety of machines to include, but not limited to CNC Machining Centres & Lathes, manual milling machines, lathes and general assembly work
- To maintain a logbook over the duration of the apprenticeship period, recording projects that have been undertaken and the skills learned

- To maintain and to ensure general good housekeeping of the workplace and keep workshop equipment in good repair
- Self-check components made, to ensure accuracy and that parts adhere to company standards and drawing specifications - Liaise with peers to maintain quality standards
- Maintain a consistent standard of work and performance in line with Company standards and Health and Safety regulations
- Perform all duties relating to the position held and additional tasks as directed by the Production Manager / Machine Shop Chargehand
Essential:
- Minimum GCSE grade 4 in Mathematics and English plus at least one more in Science or Engineering
- Interest in mechanical engineering, including machining and assembly work
- High attention to detail
- Good communication skills
- Basic knowledge of conventional machining principles
- Ability to manage own time and workload
- Methodical thinker
- Problem solving
- Ability to work well within a team but also confident working solo when able
- Good time keeping
- Complete assignments in good time when issued by College or Machine Shop Chargehand
