Wight Shipyard Co is offering exciting apprenticeship opportunities for enthusiastic individuals looking to start and build a career in the marine and engineering sectors. We're currently recruiting for:

  • Metal Fabricator Apprentices
  • Engineering Operative Apprentices
  • Marine Engineering Apprentices

Each apprenticeship is a hands-on role where you’ll gain valuable experience, learn from highly skilled professionals, and work on real-life shipbuilding projects — all while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. Full support and mentoring from experienced professionals will be provided throughout the apprenticeship.

Our apprentices are vital to our future, and many go on to have long and rewarding careers with us.

 

Metal Fabricator Apprentice – Main Tasks and Responsibilities to include:

  • Interpreting technical drawings and fabrication plans.
  • Cutting, shaping, and joining metal components using tools and machinery.
  • Welding and assembling aluminium and steel structures.
  • Assisting in the construction of ship frameworks and components.
  • Using hand tools and workshop machinery safely and accurately.
  • Measuring and checking work to ensure precision and quality
  • Supporting senior fabricators in day-to-day build tasks.

Engineering Operative Apprentice – Main Tasks and Responsibilities to include:

  • Assisting in the setup, operation, and maintenance of workshop equipment.
  • Supporting the preparation and installation of mechanical components.
  • Handling materials and tools required for engineering operations.
  • Carrying out basic fitting, assembly, and maintenance tasks.
  • Ensuring work areas are clean, safe, and organised.
  • Learning and applying health and safety regulations in an engineering setting.
  • Working across departments to support production teams as needed.

Marine Engineering Apprentice – Main Tasks and Responsibilities to include:

  • Assisting with installation, maintenance, and repair of marine engines and systems.
  • Working on fuel, water, and electrical systems within vessels.
  • Supporting engine alignments, gearbox setups, and propulsion installations.
  • Learning diagnostic techniques to identify faults in marine systems.
  • Using a variety of hand and power tools for mechanical tasks.
  • Following technical drawings and specifications.

 

Essential Qualities and Skills:

  • A genuine interest in engineering, fabrication, or the marine industry.
  • Willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
  • A team player with a good work ethic and attention to detail.
  • GCSEs in Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above).

 

Apprenticeship Standard:

  • The duration of the apprenticeship will be between 2 to 4 years, dependant on the standard.
  • There is a requirement to complete off the job training for 6 hours per week where you will be learning new skills, time spent either learning something new, other courses or any support work that is not in your usual role will also be counted.
  • Weekly attendance at CECAMM as part of the Apprenticeship from September 2025.

 

Working Week:

  • 40 hours per week.
  • Monday to Thursday 7am to 4pm.
  • Friday 7am to 1pm.

Wage:

·         £302 per week (£7.55 per hour).

Additional information:

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £7.55 per hour. This applies to 16-18-year-old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
