Based in Ryde on the Isle of Wight, Power Device UK Ltd employs more than 100 members of staff in a purpose built 35,000 sq ft facility. The company consists of two divisions: Power Supplies and RF.
Power Device UK Ltd is renowned within the civil aerospace, industrial and military industries. The organisations main work is to design and manufacture custom and standard Power Supplies, RF and Microwave systems, sub-systems and components.

Rather excitingly, and owing to apprentice success, Power Device UK Ltd are now looking for two apprentice test technicians to join their friendly team and work in the testing area. Working alongside experienced team members, you will be enthusiastic, committed to learning and keen to forge a career in this fast-paced industry.
Tasks and responsibilities will include:
- The Apprentice Test Technician is an integral part of the Production Test Team; testing all products that come off of the production line at both PCB and Final Unit stages.
- The Apprentice Test Technician will learn the products, systems and processes from the experienced members of the Test Team to gain a detail working knowledge of how switch mode power supplies operate, how we test to prove products achieve the demanding customer requirements at all operating environmental conditions.
- The role includes operating a range of standard and bespoke test equipment; making ‘select on test’ component adjustments to ensure the PCBs operate within the specification and operating Automated Test Equipment.
The Apprentice Test Technicians will be expected to learn elements of PCB fault finding to identify and feedback to production on faults found during test to improve the overall yield of the production facility.
The working environment is busy with up to 30 different products going through the test department each month therefore the role is dynamic and diverse and will give the position holder a wide range of experience across different products.
The Apprentice Test Technicians are responsible for testing switch mode power supplies used in a wide range of Aerospace and Defence applications. Using a range of test equipment and processes to prove products achieve requirements, preparing the required documentation and passing units through to shipping in-line with monthly targets.
Personal, Essential Qualities:
- The ideal candidate will be someone who is not afraid of giving something new a go, willing and eager to learn new skills and dynamic to adapt to changing demands and priorities.
- The individual will ideally have a background in some form of electronics, but it is not essential.
- The Apprentices should be looking for a career in the electronics industry across, test, assembly or design.
- The individuals should have good IT skills, written and verbal communication and be flexible in their ways of working.
Key requirements:
- Applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK.
- Proof of this will be required.
- DBS checks will also be completed.
Qualifications Required:
GCSE grade C/4 or above in English & Maths (or equivalent qualification and/or ability to work towards these Functional Skills).
Apprenticeship Standard:
- Level 2 or Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship depending on the successful candidates previous qualification/s.
- Functional Skills in Maths and English if required and not previously achieved GCSE grade 4 or above.
- There is a requirement to complete 6 hours per week of off the job training, College attendance will contribute but time spent either learning something new, other courses or any support work that is not in your usual role will also be counted.
Working Week:
37.5 hours per week.
Monday to Thursday – 8.25 hours.
Friday – 4.5 hours.
Weekly attendance at CECAMM from September as part of the qualification.
Wage:
£8.00 per hour.

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £7.55 per hour. This applies to 16-18-year-old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
