Vacancy Reference: 2024_1093

Contract type: Permanent

Hours: 37 per week

This is an exciting opportunity to be a key part of a Building Control team on a beautiful island that never has a dull moment! With over 90% of the market share and a range of domestic and commercial projects to deal with, there are also dangerous structures, the Isle of Wight Festival and land stability issues to deal with. You will take a lead role in providing technical assessments and making decisions on the full range of Building Control functions.

The successful candidate will be registered with the Building Safety Regulator at Class 2A or higher and will be a member of an appropriate body such as RICS, CABE or CIOB, or working towards membership. You will need to be able to display good customer service skills, using them to establish and maintain productive business relationships with customers and partners.

The successful candidate will ensure that Building Control work is carried out in accordance with documented procedures, timescales and deadlines.

Being an island fosters a strong sense of place and pride, and this role will play a key role in delivering a safe built environment that meets requirements and public expectation. While the overriding character of the Island is rural, about 60 per cent of the Island’s population live within the main towns of Newport, Cowes, East Cowes, Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin. Newport is the county town of the Island and is the main employment centre. The Isle of Wight is well known for the quality of its environment, with its landscapes and coastlines enjoying a high level of special designation and protection. While this helps to give the island its unique character, it also presents us with the challenge of protecting, conserving and enhancing the environment, while at the same time facilitating regeneration and development.
