Pharmacy Dispensing Assistant Apprenticeship
Location: Gibbs & Gurnell Pharmacy, Ryde
Programme length: 52 weeks
Working hours: 32 hours per week, including 6 hours of paid training and development
Availability required: Monday to Saturday
Holiday entitlement: 5.6 weeks per year
Pay: £8.00 per hour, with performance-based bonuses throughout the programme
About the Apprenticeship
Gibbs & Gurnell Pharmacy is offering a 52-week Pharmacy Dispensing Assistant Apprenticeship for people who would like to begin a long-term career in community pharmacy.
No previous pharmacy experience is required. The programme combines practical workplace experience with structured training and support delivered on site.
You will work 32 paid hours per week, including 6 hours of dedicated training, study and development time.

This apprenticeship is intended to be the first step in a structured pharmacy career. Successful apprentices can progress into qualified dispensing roles and may later undertake further training to become Pharmacy Technicians.
Further progression may include involvement in clinical and vaccination services, subject to completing the appropriate qualifications, training and competency assessments.
Key Responsibilities
During the apprenticeship, you will learn how to:
- Support the safe and accurate dispensing of prescriptions.
- Prepare and label medicines under appropriate supervision.
- Receive, check and put away pharmaceutical stock.
- Manage owing medicines and prescription collections.
- Serve patients professionally and provide excellent customer service.
- Answer telephone calls and respond to routine patient enquiries.
- Maintain accurate records and follow pharmacy procedures.
- Support the wider pharmacy team with daily operational tasks.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and follow all relevant legal and professional requirements.
Training and Support
The successful candidate will receive:
- A structured 52-week Pharmacy Dispensing Assistant training programme.
- Six hours of paid training and study time each week.
- Practical support and supervision from experienced pharmacy colleagues.
- Regular progress reviews and performance feedback.

Candidate Requirements
The ideal candidate will:
- Have at least three GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent qualifications.
- Have a genuine interest in healthcare and helping patients.
- Be reliable, organised and willing to learn.
- Communicate clearly and professionally.
- Work accurately and pay close attention to detail.
- Be comfortable working as part of a busy team.
- Be available to work across Monday to Saturday.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
Previous pharmacy experience is not required, as full training and support will be provided.
