We are seeking a caring and committed Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to join our Team.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have previous experience and will work under the direct supervision of the Lead Nurse, whilst adhering with specific practice guidelines and protocols. The role is to assist the Practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of care of our patients to include treatment, preventative care, screening, and patient education. The post will also include some clinical administrative duties.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. Undertake NHS health checks
  2. Carry out ECGs as requested
  3. Support the Practice Nurse with health promotion programmes
  4. Act as a Chaperone as required
  5. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately
  6. Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
  7. Carry out BMI checks as directed
  8. Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
  9. When trained, undertake venepuncture
  10. When trained, administer flu vaccinations
  11. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
  12. Provide support during minor operations as required
  13. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
  14. Support the Practice Nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
  15. Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with guidance
  16. Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharp bins replaced in accordance with the organisation's IPC policy
  17. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

Person Specification

Other requirements

Essential

  • Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check.
  • Occupational Health clearance.

Desirable

  • Flexibility to work outside core office hours.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or working towards gaining equivalent level

Desirable

  • Previous completion of the HCA Care Certificate - as detailed within GP Mythbuster No 57 - HCAs in General Practice.
  • Phlebotomy certification.
  • Vaccination certification.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with the general public.
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a primary care environment.
  • Clinicsl Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • ECGs.
  • Patient health check, including height, weight, BP, pulse.
  • Chaperone procedure.
  • Ability to record accurate clinical notes.

Desirable

  • Venepuncture.
  • Wound care/removal of sutures and staples.

Skills

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Strong IT skills.
  • Clear, polite telephone manner.
  • Effective time management (planning and organising).
  • Ability to work as a team member and autonomously.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure.

Desirable

  • Competent in the use of Office and Outlook.
  • Clinical IT system user skills.
