Hairleaders Limited is based in Newport and is a well established and well respected Salon with a regular clientele. The team is made up of Stylists who have started as apprentices and worked their way up, achieving their qualifications and are now exemplary and established members of staff. It is a lively, friendly salon and everyone is willing to help each other and also help new apprentices learn effectively  in a supportive environment. The team is dedicated to providing the customer with a lovely experience every time they have their hair done. This salon is committed to ensuring that the basics are done well so that the more advanced elements can be tackled with relative ease. It is a forward thinking salon so it will never be boring!

The successful candidate will also be trained by the Isle of Wight College with their experienced tutors and assessors. This will prepare you for Level 3 should you wish to continue.

 Duties will include:

  • Meeting and Greeting customers, taking coats, making refreshments etc.
  • Understanding the importance of delivering excellent customer service and being able to hold a conversation with a client
  • Ensuring that the salon is clean and tidy at all times
  • Being part of a friendly team and playing your part in making the customer experience a pleasurable one
  • Observing Senior members of staff and learning from them
  • Following direction
  • Using initiative

Year 1

  • Learning about Reception and how to answer the telephone - Bookings, message taking, telephone manner etc.
  • Hairwashing
  • Tints
  • Semi Permanents
  • Perming
  • Neutralising
  • Towel drying and combing through the hair
  • Cash handing
  • Some basic cutting techniques and sectioning

Year 2

  • Cutting
  • Styling
  • Blowdrying
  • Setting
  • Perming
  • Blow drying and finishing

On completion of Level 3, Hairleaders will also sign off your National Federation of Hairdressers Certification.

  • GCSE grade C or above in English & Maths (or equivalent qualification) D Grades (or equivalents) will also be acceptable

 Apprenticeship Framework

  • L2 NVQ In Hairdressing
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT if required
  • ERR
  • PTLS

Once qualified there is a potential to progress to either Hairdressing Level 3

 Working Week

  • 37 hours over 5 days
  • 1 day per week at The Isle of Wight College (Term Time only)


  • £3.50 per hour x 37 hours to include day release at College 1 day per week



  • The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.30 per hour.  This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
