Barton Primary School is a Community School based within Newport, Isle of Wight. It provides care and education for boys and girls from 3 – 11 years. It provides a stimulating, caring, safe environment a wide range of appropriate and exciting learning opportunities to help them enjoy their education, achieve success and grow into independent responsible people with a thirst for lifelong learning.

The school has recently relocated to a bigger site with improved facilities and they are looking to recruit an Assistant to provide support within the classroom.

Main Duties

Working under the guidance of teaching/senior staff and within an agreed system of supervision you will contribute to:

  • Implementing agreed work programmes with individuals/groups, in or out of the classroom. This could include those requiring detailed and specialist knowledge in particular areas and will involve assisting the teacher in the whole planning cycle and the management/ preparation of resources.

  • Carry out agreed programmes of support devised by other professionals involved (e.g. speech and language, physiotherapy, behaviour management), providing feedback and contributing to/attending review meetings, including annual reviews of SEN Statements and supporting children with Statements of Special Needs.

  • Assist with the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans.

  • Establish productive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations.

  • Work with the teacher to establish an appropriate learning environment including lesson planning, evaluating and adjusting lessons/work plans as appropriate.

  • Monitor and evaluate learning and planned recording of achievement against pre-determined learning objectives.

  • Liaise sensitively and effectively with parents/carers as agreed with the teacher within your role/responsibility and participate in feedback sessions/meetings with parents with, or as directed.

  • Administer and assess routine tests and invigilate exams/tests.

  • Help supervise whole classes occasionally during the short-term absence of teachers. The primary focus will be to maintain good order and to keep pupils on task. 

  • To undertake tasks as required by your line manager and deemed necessary to the role.

  • To coordinate lunch time/break time staff and activities as required or deemed necessary.


Minimum Qualifications

C or above in GCSE Maths or English (or equivalent)

A previous Childcare qualification would be an advantage but is not essential.



Intermediate Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools

Functional Skills in Literacy and Numeracy (if required)



Working Week

37.5 hours per week (Term Time Only)

Attendance for Workshops/Training at the Isle of Wight College as required



Approx £100 per week



Holidays must be taken outside of term time.

As with many members of school Support Staff, the wages will be averaged out over the year to provide an income when school is closed outside of the holiday entitlement so it may be slightly less per week than advertised but it will cover days/weeks that will not be worked and yet still paid.
