 Job Description

The Payments team are looking to recruit two apprentices to support and assist within the Payroll and Pension functions. You will need to be self-motivated with good inter-personal/communication skills and be flexible in both your approach to work and hours of working. 


The successful candidate will focus on payroll and pension clerical tasks but will also provide support to the wider payments team covering tasks such as HR support duties, ordering and invoicing or the payment of creditor invoices.  At the end of the apprenticeship you will have gained a clear understanding of HMRC payroll processes, Local Government pension processes, VAT, CIS (the construction industry scheme) and the Councils financial regulations in relation to Incurring expenditure and collection of income.


During your employment you will receive on the job training learning from experienced officers and you will complete an NVQ in business administration level 2 or 3 dependant on your entry qualifications. The experience and qualification gained during the apprenticeship will be a great asset to anyone looking for a career in business administration.


The post involves daily use of SAP, Microsoft Office applications including excel, outlook and word.  

Predominantly to support the Pensions and Payroll Lead Officer to ensure the effective and efficient day to day operation of the Payroll and Pension teams.

Provide support to the wider payments team in relation to Creditor payments, Hr Support or the ordering and invoicing functions.

Core Tasks:

  1. To deal with telephone and email enquiries, responding promptly with requests.
  2. Use computer systems to update records.
  3. Assist in keeping working areas tidy, clean and organised.
  4. Undertake any other duties including training in other payments team functions; Creditors, HR Support, ordering and invoicing as appropriate and as requested by the line manager.
  5. To undertake training as required including courses thought relevant by the council and anything required by the apprenticeship training provider.


  1. Support the Payroll and Pensions Manager in day to day duties of the pensions team.
  2. Assist with filing, scanning and shredding
  3. The opening and date stamping of post
  4. The creation of pension records using Altair
  5. Processing opt out of Scheme membership
  6. Calculation and return of contributions
  7. Notation and filing of GMP’s
  8. Provision of information to pension scheme members


  1. To assist with data input to support the monthly payroll run
  2. Assist with the opening and date stamping of post.
  3. Assist with scanning and filing.
  4. Online spreadsheet fast entry
  5. Net pay checking
  6. Mileage, expenses and Redeployment claims


  • HTP & IOW Council induction

  • HTP expert assessor in business administration to; deliver qualification units, observe,collect work portfolio evidence and provide information and training
