Here at The Isle of Wight College we work with a number of employers, in a vast array of industries. A fantastic opportunity has arisen to work as a Business Administration Apprentice for Windward Engineering.

Windward Engineering is an exciting new company based in rural Rookley on the Isle of Wight, whose business mission is harnessing low density natural power and converting it into electricity. The company has developed a novel form of horizontal axis wind turbine (“HAWT”) which is configured specifically to capture low energy wind.

They are now looking for a passionate and diligent apprentice to assist in the day to day running of their office whilst working towards a Business and Administration Apprenticeship qualification.

Tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Working on reception
  • Answering the phone
  • Using Computer Systems including the use of Excel and service based software
  • Researching prices
  • Chasing up deliveries
  • Communicating with suppliers
  • Taking messages clearly
  • Participating in trade shows
  • Customer Service, liaising with staff and members of the public
  • General office administrative duties

Personal, Essential Qualities   

  • Well presented, reliable & punctual
  • Good interpersonal skills including using the telephone
  • Able to apply their own initiative
  • Highly self-motivated
  • Enthusiastic

 Qualifications Required

GCSE grade C or above in English & Maths (or equivalent qualification and/or ability to work towards these Functional Skills) 

Apprenticeship Framework

  • Level 2 NVQ in Business Administration
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT if required
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Working Week

  • 40 hours per week
  • Weekend work will be required
  • You will also attend The Isle of Wight College one day a week as part of the qualification


  • Starting at £3.50ph

*Interviewing for the role will take place week commencing 19th February, with the view to start a two-week trial from 26th February.

Apprenticeship duration will be 12 – 18 months.

In return, there will be the potential for progression for the right candidate as well as the potential for paid international travel, as the role and the business develops.

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18-year-old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
