Here at The Isle of Wight College we work with a number of employers, in a vast array of industries. A fantastic opportunity has arisen to work as a Business Administration Apprentice for Wight Karting.

Located in Ryde, Wight Karting offers the Isle of Wight’s only all-weather outdoor 500m floodlit track providing unrivalled fun, excitement and safety for people of all ages to enjoy.

They are now looking for a passionate apprentice to assist in the day to day running of this dynamic sporting business with special responsibility for booking karting by telephone, over the internet and face to face whilst working towards a Business and Administration Advanced Apprenticeship qualification.

The role involves keeping a high degree of energy and enthusiasm that will help generate customer excitement and confidence in the product.  The successful candidate will require a high level of competence and skill in IT, media awareness and a willingness for a high degree of flexibility to adapt as the business develops.


Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Greeting Customers promptly and warmly whilst putting them at ease with the environment
  • Dealing one to one with customers’ needs and requirements ensuring satisfaction at all times
  • Responsibility for accurate application of specialist race software where full training will be provided
  • Desk sales and up sales
  • Diner duties as required during quiet days
  • Cash handling
  • Booking in customers, both on line and by phone
  • Helping keep social media and websites up to date with customer photographs, Offers, Events and Availability
  • Cleaning/housekeeping in all customer areas

  • Previous experience in dealing with customers and working under pressure to keep to a prescribed timing schedule
  • Excellent level of literacy and numeracy

 Qualifications Required

GCSE grade C or above in English & Maths (or equivalent qualification and/or ability to work towards these Functional Skills) 

Apprenticeship Framework

  • Level 3 NVQ in Business Administration
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English, if required
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Working Week

  • This will vary depending on the season; Wight Karting are open 7 Days a week in school holidays from 10am until late  
  • Out of school holidays - open 12 noon – 6pm (Closed Thursday) 
  • You will be working between 30 – 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings 
  • You will also attend The Isle of Wight College one day a week as part of the qualification


  • £3.50ph plus commission related to performance. Performance related bonuses could see the successful candidate earning an additional £120 per month in salary.

Apprenticeship duration will be 12 – 18 months.

Wight Karting are a non-smoking organisation who have strict rules regarding personal mobile telephone storage whilst on the premises. They require all staff to pass an enhanced CRB or equivalent, prior to employment contracts being issued.

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18-year-old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training. Once qualified, there may be an opportunity to progress to a level 4 and participate in year 2 or 3 Mini MBA IW Chamber Commerce depending on suitability / need.
